MeCCG.net: what & why

Post by Gwaihir » Sun Sep 08, 2002 11:44 pm

What:
One 'site' for everyting MeCCG on the web: all MeCCG related information; official or just fun, of Worldwide interest or pretty local, in any language, all MeCCG forums, all MeCCG mailinglists.
I wrote 'site' because I want something with the user-feel of one large integrated site. In reality it may however be a network of sites - that remains to be determined.
As such it will be a place for users to find their MeCCG info and a place for webmasters / enthousiasts to post their MeCCG info.
I hope that eventually all MeCCG stuff that remains on the web outside MeCCG.net is of one of these three categories:
a) An entry point to MeCCG.net: an old URL that now links on, or a subpage of a larger (Tolkien / Games / whatever) site that directs onwards.
b) MeCCG sales pages of a webstore. I do want to incorporate a uniform option for sellers to present themselves (like they now do at Chris Cable's), but sellers will obviously have and want their own systems elswhere.
MeCCG.net will not 'randomly' favor certain stores, not even those of its direct contributors/webmasters. I will not rule out sponsorship in any form (performing webmastering duties being a form too), but I would like MeCCG.net to be a place all can link to with confidence, including store owners (who generally prefer to keep their clientele).
c) Something we cannot incoporate; probably for copyright reasons but other forms of illegal / distastefull would qualify too.

Why:
Because so many sites come and go, leaving the websurfer wondering if MeCCG still lives and / or where he / she could get his info. Pretend to be an outsider and search for MeCCG (etc) in any search engine: you are likely to find quite a disorienting mess.
Because so many webmasters invest great time and energy in building something and are exhausted by the time 'yet another average site' has been launched: I'd rather see them all build on by adding to what's already there at MeCCG.net and contributing their efforts as a basis for others to build on. This would allow for much more specilization of each person, thus (hopefully) leading to great final quality.
Because so many MeCCG webmasters have to make do with space that throws lots of totally unrelated adds at its users.

I hope that all current MeCCG sites will donate their content to this all encompassing project and that all active MeCCG webmasters as well as anyone who'd like to become one, will join the MeCCG.net team were each will get control over an area / specialty of his liking (a content area, a design area, a site building area, a moderator or translator position, etc, etc.)

Note: MeCCG.net is a concept in it's early stage, so the idea of 'what' is very likely to still change a lot and the idea of 'why' will probably evolve as well.

Aside from that info site (the front if you will) I also hope we can facilitate all forms of MeCCG-projects, such as promotion, organization of events, development of (on and off line) resources, with stuff like a virtual work area, but also by recording best practices and making those records available, etc.

Hey Wim, you might remember me from the silent tower list. Chad and I are still hanging at The Council of Lorien and I think that a single source of MECCG info is a good thing, wanted to see what you thought as I guess smaller councils may have folded by now. Shoot me a PM or feel free to discuss here :)
