[Hero deck] Entmoot under Arien's glance

Post by Fangorn » Fri Aug 08, 2008 9:22 pm

Here I post my favorite deck, 'Entmoot under Arien’s glance'.
I played it at Worlds 2008.

I will explain first how I built it (as far as I remember).

This deck is designed to be played against hero (and fallen-wizard). Its main theme is Ents, one of my favorite features of Middle-earth.

Theme

[Res MPs] Treebeard, Leaflock, Skinbark and Quickbeam
[Sideboard] Ents of Fangorn
[Sideboard] Ent-draught
[Res supp] Fireworks * 3
[Haz creat] Ent in Search of the Entwives * 3
[Haz creat] Old Man Willow

Resource MPs

I searched then for MPs playable in Ents area :
[Res MPs] Woses of Old Pûkel-land (at Wose Passage-hold), which fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Res MPs] Major item * 2 (at Isengard and Glittering Caves)
[Res MPs] Riders of Rohan (at Edoras)
[Res MPs] Greater item (at Moria)
[Res MPs] Beornings (at Beorn’s House), which fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Res MPs] Gwaihir (at Eagle Eyrie), which fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Sideboard] The Great Eagles (at Eagle Eyrie), which fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Res MPs] Gollum (at Moria or Goblin-gate), which prevent – or may follow – the play of My Precious.

I decided to play twin swords Glamdring and Orcrist (though Wormsbane would have been a good choice too instead of Orcrist), and Red Arrow, putting Riders of Rohan in sideboarded and adding a Longbottom Leaf to access it :
[Res MPs] Orcrist
[Res MPs] Glamdring
[Res MPs] Red Arrow
[Res supp] Longbottom Leaf
[Sideboard] Riders of Rohan

Support strategy

Because of lots of free-holds (Wellinghall, Edoras, Eagle Eyrie, Beorn’s House), I added :
[Res MPs] Forewarned is Forearmed (protection against Assassin)
[Res MPs] Houses of Healing (healing outside havens)

Because I wanted to ensure maximum playability of Ent in Search of the Entwives and wanted to play The Sun Unveiled, I decided to play an active Gates of Morning support strategy :
[Res supp] Gates of Morning * 3
[Res supp] The Sun Unveiled * 2 (removing hazards and untapping is great !)
[Res supp] Many Turns and Doublings * 3 (reducing hazard limit ; additionally great canceller of at least Isengard automatic attack)
[Res supp] The Cock Crows * 2 (removing hazards)
[Res supp] Dark Quarrels * 2 (halving strikes ; additionally great canceller of Assassin and Sellswords between Charters and at least Moria and Goblin-gate automatic attack)
[Haz event] Twilight * 3 (no room left in resource part)

Finally I added overall useful support cards
[Res supp] A Friend or Three
[Sideboard] A Friend or Three
[Sideboard] Marvel’s Told * 2, in case of difficulty to keep Gates of Morning

Character Pool

I needed high-mind sage character to play Fireworks ; but I didn’t chose Elf-lord because of their negative MPs.
[Char] Thranduil (starting character), 'highest' mind and direct influence
[Char] Thrain II (in deck if not played during draft)
[Char] Glorfindel II (in deck if not played during draft)

I needed ranger characters for the full use and Many Turns and Doublings and to protect against River.
[Char] Beorn (starting character), who can easily influence his faction, and fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Char] Voteli (starting character), who is a sage too, has 1 direct influence, and has a great bonus against Nazgul
[Char] Ghân-buri-ghân (in deck if not played during draft), who has a nice bonus against the Wose faction, and fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Char] Elladan and Elrohir (removed from play if not played during draft)
[Char] Eomer (in deck if not played during draft), who has same home site as and a bonus against Riders of Rohan

Having 1 mind left for starting company, I chose my last character.
[Char] Dori (starting character)

I chose Cram for starting minor items, because Wellinghall is 5 region away from Rivendell, and untapping is great.
[Start] Cram * 2

Wizards

I discarded Radagast because he isn’t sage (can’t use Fireworks).
I discarded Gandalf because he isn’t ranger (can’t use Many Turns and Doublings).
I discarded Pallando because his home site is to far from play area, and he’s often played.
I had a preference for Saruman, being less often used.
[Wizard] Saruman * 2, who can appear at Isengard and cancel thus the automatic-attack
[Wizard] Alatar, who reduce cards drawn by opponent.

Hazard creatures

I chose already 4 creatures (having no specific canceller) which target regions, so I chose creatures (having no specific canceller) which target sites.
[Haz creat] Pûkel-men * 2, for shadow-holds, dark-holds and ruins surrounding White Mountains (key sites The Stones and Isengard), which fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Haz creat] Cave-drake * 2, for ruins and lairs
[Haz creat] Slayer * 2, for border-holds

Because Forewarned is Forearmed is played as resource, I replaced Slayer by Sellswords between Charters.
[Haz creat] Sellswords between Charters * 2, for border-holds and shadow-holds

I added a last creature
[Haz creat] Cave Worm

I added 2 half-creatures, but didn’t wanted to play The Mouth, Adunaphel, Uvatha, Baduila and Daelomin at Home ; and The Mouth, Adunaphel and Uvatha may be covetous prey for an Alatar opponent.
[Haz creat] Beorning Skin-changers, which fits well in deck as special feature of Middle-earth
[Haz creat] Smaug at Home, because I used lots of sites with 1 card to draw and additionally The Lonely Mountain is a site often used.

Hazard strategy

Having 6 allies in my deck, and ally points being the 'compulsary' MP category less often used, I chose a Call of Home strategy in order to double ally points.
[Haz event] Call of Home * 3
[Haz event] Shut yer Mouth * 3
[Haz event] Rebel-talk
[Haz event] So You’ve Come Back
[Haz event] Cruel Claw Perceived, which is devastating against fallen-wizard
[Sideboard] Reluctant Final Parting, which is very surprising when it works
[Sideboard] Stay her Appetite
[Sideboard] Diminish and Depart, against elves and hobbits
[Sideboard] Anarin, against squatting Pallando, to move to Old Forest and to wait for his last move for Tom Bombadil

I couldn’t add Stormcrow because my wizard couldn’t else have Thranduil as follower.

I completed it with the following cards
[Haz event] Bane of the Ithil-stone * 2, because I don’t need to access to my draw pile or discard pile and it hinders lots of decks
[Haz event] An Unexpected Outpost
[Haz event] River * 2

Sideboard

For company vs company combat
[Sideboard] Bow of the Galadhrim
[Sideboard] Crept along Carefully
[Sideboard] All the Bells Ringing
[Sideboard] Power Against the Shadow

Against The One Ring, lots of cards because deck is slow (as the Ents !) and it's impossible to exhaust before dunk.
[Sideboard] Scroll of Isildur
[Sideboard] In the Heart of his Realm
[Sideboard] Seized by Terror
[Sideboard] Something Else at Work

Others
[Sideboard] Muster Disperses
[Sideboard] No Way Forward
[Sideboard] The Sun Shone Fiercely, against dwarves
[Sideboard] Short Legs are Slow, against hobbits
[Sideboard] Lure of the Senses, against squatting Pallando and sages
[Sideboard] Mordor in Arms, against big MP factions around Mordor
[Sideboard] Durin’s Bane, against Underdeeps
[Sideboard] The Way is Shut, against Underdeeps
[Sideboard] Lost in Free-domains, against Gondor
[Sideboard] Itangast Ahunt, against hoard items
[Sideboard] Drowning Seas, against coastal

Sites

Rivendell
Lorien
Wellinghall
Eagle Eyrie
Beorn’s House
Edoras
Wose Passage-hold (beware : Skinbark can’t move to this site)
Isengard
Glittering Caves
Moria
Goblin-gate (beware : Treebeard, Leaflock and Skinbark can’t move to this site)
Mount Gundabad (beware : Treebeard, Leaflock and Skinbark can’t move to this site)

Strategy for 1st turn

Voteli is a lure. I don’t play often, but I’ve never seen her played, and opponent may forget his ability against Nazgul.
Always move Beorn with Voteli to Mount Gundabad (where the 3 items are playable) to allow opponent to play Nazgul (e.g. Adunaphel or Uvatha).
Always move Thranduil and Dori to Wellinghall (by discarding Cram), using Dori as cannon-fooder for Cave Worm.

Remark

You may have noticed I don’t use lots of rare cards ; in fact I only own a collector set, preventing me to play more than one non-unique rare cards. Additionally, I don’t like to play with rare cards from my collection.
If I can’t borrow extra Pûkel-Men and Bane of the Ithil-stone for official tournaments, I would replace them by Silent Watcher and Flotsam and Jetsam.
Hrum, Hoom ! Do not be hasty, that is my motto.

Nice deck. Are 3 Fireworks enough without Smoke Rings? How did the deck perform at worlds?

Consider to pack The Arkenstone in SB. Easy playable in Moria (with the help of so many Ents) and 5 MP late game are always welcome. To manage the corruption at the council you could pack A friend or 3 or even better: Pledge of Conduct to SB, too.

btw: You know your hazard deck should have been pretty unique at worlds? :D  Or how many other players didnt use Mouth of Sauron but Bane of the Ithil Stone?  8O

Nice deck.
Thanks a lot ! I'm very proud of it !
It hasn't the level to win any tournament, but it's original and very fun to play, moreover if you like Ents !

Are 3 Fireworks enough without Smoke Rings?
I played this deck about 12 times (including the 6 games of Worlds), and I never encounter problems with Fireworks, except I overall had to waste one turn at Wellinghall about 5 times.
Additionally, ultimate goal should be considered to have the 4 Ents in play, which occur not very often. Approximatively, I finished games with :
- 4 Ents 3 times (I'm sure of this one because I always remember it),
- 3 Ents 3 times,
- 2 Ents 4 times,
- 1 Ent 2 times,
- 0 Ent never (I'm sure of this one because I would have been shameful).

If I'm waiting for Fireworks and have an Ent-ally in hand, I discard it.
If I'm waiting for Fireworks and it's soon end of game, I 'abandon' Wellinghall.
So 3 Fireworks are enough without Smoke Rings.

Consider to pack The Arkenstone in SB.
I don't think it's a good idea, because I have only 2 dwarves, Dori being cannon-fooder and Thrain II being not often used.

How did the deck perform at worlds?
I posted my report : http://www.meccg.net/dforum/viewtopic.php?t=2855
I ended 22th about 32 with 11 TPs, which is a great result for me. I think my deck had the potential for 15 TPs.

You know your hazard deck should have been pretty unique at worlds?
As far as I remember, during almost each game my opponent played indeed 'the ultimate set of five' : The Mouth, Adunaphel, Uvatha, Baduila and Daelomin at Home.
Hrum, Hoom ! Do not be hasty, that is my motto.

Very unique, nice deck. I especially liked how you detailed your deckbuilding process.
Your tournament report really shows how much you enjoyed playing the deck.
