For beginners & experts: customizing the Challenge Decks

I'm still relatively new to MeCCG, and enjoying the Challenge Decks.  I thought it might be useful to have some threads here discussing some of the individual Challenge Decks, in order to help beginners understand how a deck works, and some of the basics of deck-building.  My idea is to use a pre-constructed Challenge Deck as a starting point, analyze some of its strengths and weaknesses, and try to improve it into a stronger deck by customizing it slightly with commons and a few uncommons.

Some self-imposed limitations, mainly in view of the fact that this is geared towards newer players:
- no more rares can be added, aside from those already in the Challenge Deck.
- any cards can be removed, as long as they are replaced mostly with commons and the odd uncommon
- restrict the deck to a hero alignment vs hero, since that is what new players usually begin with.
- cards should mostly be from METW, although cards can also be from MeTD and MEDM as well.

Perhaps this is a great way for beginners and casual players like me to learn some of the basics about deck-building.  I'll post the original deck-list, the play-tips that come with the Challenge Decks, as well as an older but helpful analysis from Card of the Day.  Feel free to jump in with analysis of the existing deck, and suggestions for customizing/improving it by replacing cards.

Threads like this could potentially be very useful to new players in understanding how the Challenge decks work, and some basic deck-building considerations, so I hope this idea will take off!  If this works, I'll post another thread with a different Challenge Deck at a later date.  Thanks in advance for any input!  Here's the link to the first one:
