Is Dirk Doctor nuts?

Post by tbadiuk » Thu Mar 13, 2008 9:01 pm

Just wondering...I've just had the most surreal email exchange/trading experience with him.  I've never met someone like him in my 12 years of trading MECCG.

Just thought I'd post and see if anyone else has had any 'incidents' with him.

Thanks,
Ted

I'm pretty sure it's his real name?     He's been around from a long time ago on Chris's site.  I even did a trade with him way back in the late 90's.  Mind you, the person who contacted me said he was Dirk Doctor, no telling I guess if it really was the same person. (time to put on my tinfoil hat, I can hear the black helicopters outside my window! )

Do you have any intentions to share anything that he said, or are you just teasing us? =)

Well, I guess I can share.  I didn't want to post up our actual email exchange as I figured that might be a bit impolite.  However, I can give a summary:

He basically contacted me about an old for sale listing on Chris's where I listed a Spanish Starter set for $160.   I informed him that the price was no longer valid but I'd be happy to try and work a trade.  He then starter talking about suing me as he figured I had to honor the advertised price (what am I, Walmart?). He'd shown our exchange to his "lawyer fiends", and they were considering fly to Canada and starting legal proceedings.  He also literally commanded me to send the cards and he's pay me later when they arrived, plus various outright demands in the email exchange.

It was a little surreal.  At first I thought he was trolling me (I thought maybe he was British and it was a form of British humor or something) but no, he was serious...!  8O

Wow.

That's pretty bad.  I have no idea what the legalities of a site such as Chris's Trade Centre are, but it's explicitly stated all over the site that the whole system works on trust - and threatening to sue seems to me to be a fairly large breach of trust.

I would imagine that the notices on that site hold about as much legal weight as posting notes on a public bulletin board - "bike for sale, £25 or best offer" and such.

Still, it's a little scary - makes you wonder what exactly the law says about this sort of thing.  If you post a public advertisement, are you legally bound to sell the item for the price posted to whoever wants to buy it?  That's certainly not how these things usually work with personal deals (i.e. not involving a company), except for auction sites like ebay of course.

That was some very strange behaviour. I don´t think he has a chance of actually suing you, to be honest. Just looking at the relatively small amounts of money involved, and that his demands doesn´t compute towards the rules that Chris site uses. I just surprised by his reaction, tbh.

I thought that Chris removed lists that weren´t up to date, but he might have missed yours...

Didn't know what you were refering to, just realized I mispelt "friends" as "fiends". Freudian slip?
