This was a fun optional way of playing

I was thinking about Gandalf coming to Hobbiton for Bilbo and got an idea.

What I did was build one giant shared deck with about 70 resources and 70 hazards and one copy each of about 40 characters.

The rules of the game are all the same, just the starting ones are changed a bit.
What we did was start with the wizard we wanted to play, it could also be  random, he could have a wizards staff and one minor Item.
Then characters were brought into play as usual.

This felt more like I was the Wizard wandering around looking for folks to gather up for a company.

We havent run into any problems yet, but if we do Ill post them and find out what you guys think :)

Did you start with the wizard and a starting party of characters or just the wizard and then picked up characters later as you drew them?

Just the wizard to start then as you draw characters put them into play(as per the normal rules, of course). I tried it with just a wizard with no items, but I lost my Gandalf really quickly without any items on him (that -1 for the extra strikes on an attack adds up quicker than what I anticipated, gandalf was taken out nefore I could get any  items on him), so I decided to give him either a wizards staff or one of the +2 prowess swords and one minor item to start.
There are enough character cards in the deck to draw one very frequently to make sure that the party is growing fairly quickly.

We really liked it because we dont know whos going to get what characters in the game other than the Wizard.

Does anyone know a good site to find like Frodo and Bilbo without breaking the bank? Those are a couple that we dont have yet.... :)

By the way, do I lose if my wizard is killed by a creature hazard?
That Smaug ahunt with Doors of night also in play really toasted Gandalf fairly quickly (Guess Smaug is still ticked about that thing with the dwarves ;) )

Yes if you are playing with standard rules.  No if you play with tournament rules.  With tourney rules you just take a -5 MP penalty if your wizard dies or is corrupted and you keep playing.

So you bring them in with thw Wizard at home site or a Haven only? Did that slow the game down a lot?

Sounds like a cool idea though. Could you also do it with separate decks, perhaps discarding duplicated characters drawing a new card?
So that's where that southerner is hiding...He looks more than half like a goblin.

How about the 70/70 deck itself. What kind of cards do you put in?
How about the location deck? Do you use a shared location deck so that no one can go back to a site someone else has visited, tapped and discarded? Or else, does each player have to bring his own location deck?

Hi, sorry to insist on this, but could you provide us with a general list of cards that you used in this nice variant of the game?

Thanks,
