MECCG at GenCon?

Post by BeeBoy » Tue Mar 25, 2008 7:49 pm

I know that there has been some ME at GenCon every year for a while.  Is that still the case this year?  I think I'll actually be able to go this year to at least a day or two of the convention.  In order to be able to go I really should plan for it now, but I don't really want to go unless there will definitely be some ME going on.  I'd enjoy other things happening there too, but not enough to schedule around.

Indeed, there will be MECCG at Gencon again this year!  I'm hosting 4 tournaments, 1 each day of the event.  Times haven't been confirmed yet, but currently I have:

Thursday: Hero Sealed Deck
Friday: North American Nats Qualifier
Saturday: Lidless Eye Booster Draft
Sunday: NA Nats Finals & Challenge Deck Tournament

I'm trying to schedule the Thursday/Friday/Saturday events for the evening (4pm-10pm) and the Sunday ones for morning (10am-4pm).  That worked really well for us last year.

When I get confirmation, I will make an official post, but since you asked, that's the tentative plan. :)

Fantastic!   What do you recommend for the rest of the time?  (though I might just come for the MECCG events and work in the mornings)

For me personally, I spend a lot of the extra time with a few of the other gaming hobbies/addictions I have.  Boardgaming has gotten better at Gencon (still not as good as it is at Origens, but oh well), and it's very easy to kill a good half-day in the dealer room.  Then I'll probably jump in a few Magic booster drafts and if you're into RPGing at all, the True Dungeon that Gencon runs each year is quite amazing, though tickets go quick and are a bit pricey.

For those of you coming to Gencon, or anyone who is considering it, here are the events I am hosting this year:

8/14/08 4:00 PM - Middle Earth Hero Sealed Deck
8/15/08 4:00 PM - North American Nationals Qualifier
8/16/08 4:00 PM - Lidless Eye Booster Draft
8/17/08 10:00 AM - Nationals Finals (Top Four) + Challenge Deck Tournament (everyone else)

I think I'll only be able to be there on Thursday.   Maybe Friday as well, but without the ability to stay until Sunday I'd just be playing dreamkiller in the Nationals Qualifier.

Is the Hero sealed "sites you open", "sites you bring", or "all sites, whether you brought a site deck or not"?

I made the mistake of not preregistering, and immediately remembered stories of huge long lines for entrance badges.   Oh well, I'm still excited!  I'll probably only get to go to one day per year as long as I'm in this job, but at least I'm living close enough to drive in for one day.

I will be at Gencon this year for WoW TCG continentals and I could be playing the Hero sealed deck on thursday as the continental starts friday. I want to know if I could bring my own products for the sealed, and what does it consists of (how many boosters, which set)? Also, the sealed products I own are in French, is this fine?

Because of how Gencon handles ticketing, you won't be able to use your own product.  I can't, say, charge one price for folks with product, and a different price for those without it.

As far as sites, the way I usually run it is

sealed deck: full site deck
booster draft: you draft your sites

So this year Hero will be full site deck, Minion will be draft your sites.

Will we need to register for this event ahead of time, or is it possible to show up with general tickets in hand at 2:00?

I know I'm replying after the fact, but I wanted to post here just for future reference.  For any MECCG events I run at Gencon, generic tickets are fine.  I handle it the way Chad has done for years before me: if an odd number show up, I will play to make the pairings even.  If an even number show up, I will sit out so no one has to take a bye.  So come one come all, next year!

Special note: Nats will not be at Gencon next year, so we will instead have some other themed tournaments and events. :)

I only was able to be there for a day, but GenCon was amazing.   It was great to see some faces from the past and get to play my favorite game again.

I also got to witness some of the coolest sealed deck plays I've ever seen.  My favorite was when Scatha Ahunt was about to be crushed by True Fana...except that Many Sorrows Befell Alatar instead.

Joe made me promise to actually play on GCCG (as opposed to just occasionally logging in to watch a game), so you'll soon have another newbie on there to help bumble through the interface.

Thanks to everyone who was there!  I had a blast!

For those interested, Nats will be held at Dragon Con in Atlanta next year (Labor Day Weekend).  I've spoken with Josh and he's graciously allowed me to hold this event on the East Coast at Dragon Con.

I've spoken with the director of CCGs at Dragon Con this year and everything is already in the works.  So get ready for some Hotlanta weather and crazy Dragon Con atmosphere and get your game on!
